Why a Migrant party?

Last update - Thursday, May 17, 2007, 00:00 By Metro Éireann

I read your interesting article about the brief life of the Migrants Party of Ireland. I wish there was such a party. It would have been a way of measuring how Ireland has integrated its immigrant communities.

Personally, I think immigrants who are interested in politics should start grouping together as the country begins to plan for the 2009 local election. Many like myself believe that immigrants have a place in Irish politics – I know that two Nigerians were elected to the local council in 2004.

Many people expect the number of immigrant councillors to double in 2009. I believe this is a good thing for the country. I believe it will show that Ireland is quickly integrating its immigrant population. The only danger I see is that some existing politicians will be displaced by immigrants, and that has a potential to becoming a race issue. I hope that doesn’t happen.
