Last update - Thursday, January 1, 2009, 07:30 By Metro Éireann

A US senator has apologised for telling offensive ‘jokes’ about the Polish.

epublican senator for Pennsylvania Arlen Specter (pictured) reportedly made the quips at a New York gathering of Republican representatives.
The New York Post reported that Specter was speaking at the Rockefeller Centre’s Rainbow Room when he asked if anyone in the audience was Polish. When around 10 guests out of hundreds raised their hands, Specter reportedly told several tasteless jokes, which he is now refusing to repeat.
“I apologise for the comments I made Friday at a Republican State Committee luncheon in New York,” Specter wrote in a letter to the Polish American Congress. “In retrospect I can see they were inappropriate and I regret having made them.”
