UN?steps in to force Gaddafi’s hand

Last update - Tuesday, March 1, 2011, 21:59 By Metro Éireann

Last weekend the UN Security Council met in New York to decide on what action it would take against Libya’s regime. Some of the key actions highlighted included a travel ban on Col Gaddafi, his family and close associates, as well as an arms embargo and asset freeze. All of this, the council suggested, might persuade Gaddafi to reconsider the force he is using to end the strongest uprising against his 42-year rule.

Of particular interest is a proposal to report him to the International Criminal Court for possible charges of crimes against humanity. This follows several reports that he had executed hundreds of his own people, including innocent passers-by, opposition and protesters, many of whom were unarmed.
As the crisis entered its second week, the dictator has consistently pledged to fight to the death. While some of his military have defected to the opposition, he has armed his civilian supporters and continues to recruit foreign mercenaries. There is also a warning by his son, Saif al-Islam, that his family will turn the uprising into a civil war.
While we welcome any action, even military, that could lead to a peaceful resolution of the crisis, it is extremely important that we understand Gaddafi will not fall easily. This is why we welcome the decision of US President Barack Obama to impose unilateral sanctions. The EU, UK and other major countries should follow suit immediately, if the sanctions are to be effective.
The opportunity presented by the strong will of the people of Libya for Gaddafi to go should not be obstructed.
