A judge has been called to make a public apology for describing burglars as ‘knackers’ and encouraging homeowners to use force against them.
Traveller support group Pavee Point spoke out over comments made by Judge Geoffrey Browne at a recent sitting of Tuam District Court.
“The use of the term ‘knacker’ is extremely insulting to Travellers and there is no place for racist language in our courtrooms,” said Martin Collins of Pavee Point.
“These comments are dangerous and irresponsible. The use of racist language by a judge is completely unacceptable and does not instil faith in the judicial system.
“We are calling for Judge Browne to make a public apology. ”
Judge Browne’s comments follow recent comments by Judge Seamus Hughes at a sitting of Athlone District Court where he described Traveller men as “neanderthal”.
“It is clear that an accountability mechanism for judges is needed,” said Collins, who reiterated Pavee Point’s call for a judicial council to be established on a statutory basis as a matter of urgency.
“We call on Justice Minister Alan Shatter to prioritise the enactment of legislation to give the necessary powers to the judicial council to investigate and hold to account judges who behave unethically. ”
Pavee Point said the comments are part of a spate of anti-Traveller sentiments expressed by people in positions of public authority.
“These comments incite hatred and undermine the work of Traveller organisations in trying to promote positive relations between the Traveller and settled community, ” said Collins.
“We call on all political representatives to show leadership and for parties to hold their members to account.”
