The hope has come. As Waterford Crystal looks set to survive, the Irish economy seems finally to have grasped the brake and perhaps stopped its catastrophic fall.
With an MA in History, I’m hardly an expert on economic matters, but cannot fail to notice some similarities and differences in Ireland and Poland’s recessions.
In Poland’s case, the highly increased national debt has been the main talking point, but I bet the banks have been discussed as well, however quietly.
But the question of TV and radio stars’ wages is a shared topic of interest in Poland and Ireland’s recession inquisitions.
Watching RTÉ News and its Polish equivalents such as Panorama and WiadomoÅ›ci, I see mostly the same faces (RTÉ), and changing faces according to political preferences (Panorama and WiadomoÅ›ci). Overpaid? Probably.
I remember only one Polish news presenter who held her role for years because she was simply extremely good. Although now retired, she is still heard in many nature documentaries and advertisements. Her voice itself is a market product, and I would never entertain suggestions that she earns too much. But many names and faces are over-advertised.
They should take a pay cut, whether in Ireland or Poland.
