What’s the problem with the Eurovision? After hearing the results of this year’s qualification concert gala in Poland, I decided to jot down some thoughts and here they are:
1) People in Poland who know something about music don’t watch television.
2) Too many teenagers own mobile phones and computers with access to the internet.
3) Referees should have much more to say.
4) Finally, our society has many musical idiots.
I might add that I personally stopped having any interest in this competition when the performers were allowed to sing in English.
Do I have something against the selected artist, Lidia Kopania, or her song? Not really. Even though I listen to music that is vastly different, it does not mean I have no idea about pop music. I have. There are various styles within pop music and plenty of choice.
What I am concerned about is this: will this song add anything valuable to Polish or European music? If it will, please tell me what it is because at this point my answer is “no”. To me, it sounds rather flat in both melody and lyrics and is simply behind Edyta Górniak’s runner-up.
To perform on stage and to represent the country are two different things, and I suspect we are going to be bitterly disappointed.
Nevertheless, I wish Lidia Kopania well in Moscow. Hopefully she will at least make it to the final.
