Teens invited to sample college life

Last update - Thursday, March 25, 2010, 12:27 By Metro Éireann

SECONDARY school students from immigrant backgrounds are among those being invited to taste college life this summer.

The Discover University programme, organised by the National College of Ireland (NCI) and Duke University in the US, is aimed at whetting young people’s appetites for further study.
The weeklong summer programme is for students aged 14-15 and 16-17 and will centre on the theme of ‘community living’.
Appetiser classes on subjects such as business, marketing, human resources, computing, digital media and community studies will be organised along with a range of fun extracurricular activities, while NCI and Duke students will be on hand to answer questions on college life.
The programme will wrap up with a graduation ceremony and barbecue for students, their families and invited guests.
The closing date for applications is 9 April 2010. Participants will have an induction day on 21 June before the programme, which runs 24-30 June from 10am-4pm each day at the NCI, Mayor Street, Dublin 1.
