Support for the blind means more than ever

Last update - Thursday, May 7, 2009, 00:33 By Metro Éireann

The National Council for the Blind in Ireland (NCBI) has always relied on income from fundraising to enable us to develop new services for people who are blind and vision impaired around the country.

These efforts now mean more than ever before as our State funding has been cut, but the number of services we offer and the quality of those services remains the same, leaving us with a bigger deficit to make up each year.
About 18 per cent of people using the NCBI’s services are completely blind, while 82 per cent have varying degrees of usable vision. We promote the full independence of people who are blind or vision-impaired and provide a range of services to approximately 14,000 people around the country.
The NCBI would like to thank our loyal supporters around the country who help us to ensure that people living with sight loss can continue to do the things they have always enjoyed, whether that be reading, browsing the internet or keeping in touch with friends and family. We would also like to invite new fundraisers and volunteers to become friends of the NCBI by supporting us in whatever way they can.
If you have already registered for the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon on 1 June but have not yet decided which charity you would like to support, please think of NCBI – your support makes a real difference. Or if you have a few hours to spare each month to fundraise on behalf of the NCBI, we could use your help.
Contact us on LoCall 1850 33 43 53 or visit www.ncbi.ie if you can support us in any way.
