Sufis march for peace and respect to mark Prophet’s birth date

Last update - Wednesday, March 20, 2013, 14:09 By Chinedu Onyejelem

A group of Sufi Muslims  held a five-day celebration in Dublin recently to celebrate Mawlid-E-Nabi, the birth of the Prophet Muhammad.

Events included special prayers, spiritual classes, meditation and a peace march from O’Connell Street to the Anwar-E-Madina Dublin City Mosque on Talbot Street.

Mia Manan, one of the organisers, told Metro Éireann that it was a unique initiative that he and the Dublin branch of the Irish Sufi Foundation were proud to be part of.

According to Manan, this is the first time a march had been organised by Sufi Muslims in the capital. He added that the event shows “the original and true colours of Islam – the Prophetic way.”

He continued: “I’m pretty much confident [that in the coming] years it will grow, as it brings all nations and religions together.”

To illustrate the uniqueness of the event in promoting cross-cultural understanding and co-operation, Manan said some participants at the march carried placards that read ‘Respect All Religions’ and ‘Love and Peace Amongst All’.
