Speedier citizenship is a welcome change

Last update - Friday, July 1, 2011, 17:46 By Metro Éireann

The move to speed up the process of granting Irish citizenship to immigrants is a very welcome development.

As your paper has so often pointed out, up to now many immigrants were caught in the limbo between Irish residency and full citizenship. These immigrants are vulnerable to exploitation by ruthless employers and others.

There will still be the problem of social injustice in society, but at least immigrants will not have as many barriers to a possibly better future.
