Ski Club of Ireland calls immigrants to the slopes

Last update - Thursday, September 6, 2007, 00:00 By Metro Éireann

THE SKI Club of Ireland is to host an event aimed at getting immigrants to come along to the Republic’s only dry ski slope, in particular those who have skiing experience from their home countries.

The Ski Club’s ‘International Day’, set to take place on 16 September, will offer discounts to immigrants looking to make use of the facility.

Kathryn Mason, one of the organisers of the event told Metro Eireann, “We’re inviting non-Irish skiers, in particular those from central and eastern Europe, to visit our slopes in Kilternan, Co Dublin.” She continued, “We are offering a special reduced rate of 20 euro for a lesson or practice session on the slopes for adults, students or children.”

Mason added that the organisation is hoping the event will result in immigrants appearing on the slopes on a regular basis: “We may, depending on ability of skiers, have Fun Races on the day for those who like to compete,” she explained. “We are also inviting foreign skiers to form teams representing their home countries and compete against the Irish team later in the season.”

The non-profit Ski Club of Ireland was founded in 1963 and moved to its current location in the 1970s. The impressive facility now boasts two ski lifts, two nursery slopes, an intermediate slope and a 180-metre main slope, and is considered one of the finest dry skiing locations in Europe.

The International Day’s discounted lessons on the dry ski slopes, which are located about 10 minutes drive from the M50, in Kilternan, Co Dublin, will be available at 11am, 2.30pm and 3pm.

Those planning on going along to the International Day event are advised to bring strong gloves and waterproof, flexible clothing. For more information or to book a discounted lesson visit: www.skiclub.ie or call 01 2955658.
