Self-publishing is a viable option

Last update - Thursday, August 15, 2013, 13:04 By Metro Éireann

After endless hassle with Irish publishers, last year I began self-publishing my writings with a print company, and I am recommending it as an option.

Now I have a voice, and I have severed all dealings with traditional publishers.

The only responsibility a writer has is not to promote hatred or racism, and that is a good thing.

I post my booklets to libraries and colleges in the UK, and I now have contacts there.

I would advise anyone who can’t get their writings published through the usual channels to consider this option. It may open doors, but don’t leave it too late.

Camara wants your old flat-screen monitors

Camara Education is experiencing a shortfall in donations of flat-screen computer monitors, preventing the delivery of valuable ICT resources to many schools in disadvantaged areas.

Over 2,000 refurbished PCs are ready for dispatch but are missing accompanying monitors. This shortage is due to the fact that many people hold on to their existing monitor when updating the rest of their computer equipment.

Camara is urgently calling on organisations and individuals to donate their old flat-screen monitors.

The delivery of these 2,000 refurbished computers will benefit another 42,000 children from disadvantaged communities, providing access to valuable digital literacy and livelihood skills, said Camara CEO John Fitzsimons.

We have the base units, the peripherals and most importantly the schools. With monitors we can make this happen and avoid these computers being recycled.

Camara Education is a social enterprise that supplies refurbished computers, along with training and support for teachers, to help improve standards of education for children in Ireland, Africa, Haiti and Jamaica.

Every reused computer has the potential to provide 21 children with digital literacy skills.
