Parents, teachers, friends and family were on hand to support the more than 135 pupils from west Dublin who battled it out for the winning prizes and a place in the second stage of the Credit Union Schools Quiz recently.

Congratulations went to the winning junior team from Castleknock Educate Togeth-er and the winning senior team from Mary Help of Christians on the Navan Road in the first stage of the nationwide competition, held at St Peregrine’s GAA Club in Blakestown.

They were followed by runner-up from Scoil Thomais in Laurel Lodge and Mary Help of Christians in the junior and senior categories respectively after a nail-biting race to the finish.

Now in its 22nd year, the Credit Union Schools Quiz is one of the most popular events of the school calendar, with some 25,000 primary pupils from all around the country taking part each year.

Quiz questions are taken from the primary curriculum and prepared by primary school teachers, covering topics such as geography, history, music, literature and sport.

The competition culminates in a national final in Dublin in early April when 100 qualifying teams will compete for the overall title.
