Sari swaps footballs for Fenders

Last update - Thursday, July 5, 2007, 00:00 By Metro Éireann

SPORT Against Racism Ireland (Sari) are usually on the lookout for footballers and referees to participate in their competitions, but this time around they are making a call for musicians and any acts interested in performing at an upcoming series of multicultural gigs.

“This is a call for bands and performers who would like to take part in a series of gigs happening over the next six months,” explained Roli Lowry, a volunteer with Sari. “We are going to expand our remit to include music.

“Social integration with multicultural gigs is the idea. It’s quite fluid at the moment but we have booked slots at The Cobblestone in North King Street in Dublin’s Smithfield. One Saturday every month we will be hosting multicultural music and comedy evenings. We’ll kick off with a Congolese band, just pencilled in at the moment.”

He added: “We are looking for all types of performers, bands, dancers or comedians. We want to showcase all countries if possible, and there won’t be the usual support act followed by main act – everyone will be headlining.

“The idea is in its infancy but we are keen that all performers from Ireland and from outside the country would get in touch with me. The idea is to get people mixing. We will be expecting a pretty mixed audience too.”

Musicians interested in  showcasing their talents should e-mail sari@iol.ie or rolilowry@hotmail.com, or call Roli Lowry at 085 724 7788.
