Royal wedding causes a stir - among Irish schoolkids

Last update - Friday, April 15, 2011, 21:32 By Catherine Reilly

THE BRITISH EMBASSY in Dublin has received phone calls from Irish schoolchildren asking questions of a highly sensitive nature – namely the design of bride-to-be Kate Middleton’s wedding dress.

An embassy spokesperson told Metro Éireann that while it hasn’t received many calls or letters from people expressly wanting to congratulate Prince William and Kate Middleton on their pending nuptials, some schoolchildren have “got in touch to ask about the likely wedding dress!”
Most contacts of late have been connected with the upcoming visit of Queen Elizabeth, “and these have generally been positive”, said the spokesperson.
As for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the embassy has no official plans to mark the occasion, but the spokesperson pointed out that the wedding day is a public holiday and “day of celebration” in the UK.
She continued: “The wedding will also reflect aspects and values of modern Britain. The guests at the wedding will represent many sections of modern British society, and include charity workers, serving and former military personnel, religious leaders, musicians, sportsmen and women.”
Meanwhile, Irish rugby captain Brian O’Driscoll – the most high-profile Irish invitee to the Royal wedding – looks set to miss out on the gala after his club side Leinster won their Heineken Cup quarter-final last weekend.
The semi-finals take place on the same weekend as the wedding on 29 April.
O’Driscoll and actress wife Amy Huberman were among 1,900 people to receive an invitation to the nuptials.
Speaking after receiving the invite, O’Driscoll had commented: “It’s quite an honour and a lovely surprise for us to have been even considered.”
