It has come to our attention that our US-based organisation, the Irish Freedom Committee, was recently referenced in your newspaper (Suspected Real IRA man held in Lithuania, 13 November 2008).
We are grateful that you have brought attention to this story regarding an Irish man suffering in terrible conditions in Likiskiu Prison, Lithuania. However we take objection to the “so-called” placed before our organisation’s name.
The name of the Irish Freedom Committee, commonly called the IFC, is protected by trademark with the US Patent and Trademark Office. Any variation thereof is incorrect.
Deirdre Fennessy,
Secretary, Irish Freedom Committee
Chicago, USA
Editor’s note: We reserve the right to add some context for our readers, and ‘Irish Freedom Committee’ may suggest that your organisation enjoys mainstream support in Ireland, which it does not.
