I read your article about foreign players who are ineligible for Irish basketball awards. I was however a bit confused about your report when I related it to modern Ireland.
I find it very difficult to believe that at the level of Irish development into a multicultural society, some organisations like Basketball Ireland are objecting to the integration of immigrants. Do they not know that they are discriminating against foreign players? I think this is very, very wrong and it needs to be challenged. I will encourage the foreign players to make an issue by reporting it to the Equality Authority.
There is no need to create two separate categories within the Irish basketball awards. I believe that only the good players need to be rewarded – and if Irish players are not getting the awards, it means that they may not be very good at what they do.
The article quoted a source in Basketball Ireland as saying that the awards are supposed to encourage home-based Irish players in the game. I think this has no merit. To me, opening it up for everyone would make home-based players work harder.
