PSNI Sikh recruits to wear turban

Last update - Thursday, August 30, 2007, 00:00 By Metro Éireann

The PSNI has said its Sikh recruits will be allowed to wear turbans as part of their uniform though they may not allow other religious items.

A PSNI spokesperson said, “For individuals who may wish to wear specific headwear on duty for religious/cultural purposes, the service will always aim to support these practices as long as the safety of the individual is not put at risk and that health and safety regulations are not breached.”

It is believed that the PSNI will require Sikhs to replace their turbans with riot helmets when attempting to quell instances of public order.

The force stopped short of confirming that the wearing of a kirpan, a dagger-like instrument Sikhs are required to carry as an article of faith,  would also be permitted.

A  spokesperson said, “Police officers from an ethnic minority community may wish to wear uniform items which have cultural, traditional or religious significance. In these cases, specific items will be consulted upon by the Uniform and Protective Measures Committee.

“All we can say is that it would be consulted upon to establish if it was acceptable from a health and safety point of view.”

It is understood that the PSNI currently has a Sikh recruit among the ranks of its trainees, who is permitted to wear his turban as part of his normal uniform.
