Polish TV shows its new face online

Last update - Thursday, January 22, 2009, 05:31 By Anna Paluch

It took a few months of tests, but Poland’s national broadcaster TVP has finally launched its new-look website with a host of innovative features.

The new site (at www.tvp.pl) not only allows viewers to follow the most popular news and current affairs programmes, but also to watch online a wide selection of documentaries and even full-length feature films.
While there are no live broadcasts apart from the news, and the sports content may be lacklustre (giving only short clips when full coverage could be expected), the new features make the website far more interesting than before, and the streaming video provides a better quality picture in comparison to RTÉ or TG4.
With its revamped design – clear and more friendly – the new website is the result of major developments within TVP itself in recent years. The most significant change was the introduction of TVP Info, which replaced the regional news network TVP3.
Four new channels have also been created, covering sport, culture and history as well as a high-definition channel which started broadcasting with the Beijing Olympic Games opening ceremony last year.
But the most significant change is still to come, as TVP prepared to move to its new premises, located at the corner of Woronicza and Samoch-odowa streets in Warsaw.
The move will begin in February, to be completed by March – more than eight years after the first contract for construction was signed. Daniel JabÅ‚oÅ„ski, spokesperson for TVP, said that the company waited for the necessary permits to use the premises for five months.
The building, designed by CzesÅ‚aw Bielecki and nicknamed the ‘Babel Tower’, will host the editorial offices of channels TVP1, TVP2 as well as the board, management and corporate office and the departments of marketing and promotions.
