THE POLISH FILM festival is returning to Dublin to exhibit the greatest achievements of Polish cinematography.
For the last three years Dublin cinema fans have had the opportunity to see a selection of the best Polish films and this year’s offering looks set to continue this trend.
Klementyna Kasprzyk-Kucharz – co-ordinator of the festival Kinopolis, which runs from 22–26 October at Cineworld on Parnell Street – said: “Polish cinema is undergoing its renaissance at the moment. Polish films are becoming more and more popular on the international stage, so I hope to expand the amount of Dubliners watching Polish movies and having an interest in Polish culture.”
The festival audience will have a chance to see 13 outstanding Polish films, many of them recently produced, and opening with the screening of Little Moscow, the winner of Golden Lions at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia in 2008.
The highlight of this year’s Kinopolis will be the screening of the greatest films directed by a Hollywood director born in Warsaw, Agnieszka Holland – hailed by Dr Tadeusz Szumowski, Poland ‘s ambassador to Ireland, as “one of the most influential and significant creators of not only Polish but also European film directing school”. Holland will be available at a public meeting following the screening.
The festival will conclude with The Cinema of Historic Transition, a film retrospective commemorating the 20th anniversary of the defeat of communism and the rebirth of democracy in Poland, with each screening preceded by a short history introduction.
Kinopolis is organised and supported by the Pomeranian Film Foundation, the Embassy of Poland in Dublin and the Polish Film Institute, in co-operation with Cineworld Dublin. Tickets are available at www.cineworld.ie.
