Paying tribute to Wangari Maathai

Last update - Saturday, October 1, 2011, 11:57 By Metro Éireann

We, the members of the Africa Students Association of Ireland (Asai), have received with great sadness the passing away of Prof Wangari Maathai.

We join her family, Kenyans, fellow Africans and all people who mourn the passing of this great African. Her demise leaves us all at a loss of one of the great leaders of our time.
Prof Maathai’s courage and example were an inspiration to us all. She charted perhaps the most important cause for the current generation and future generations of Africa: democracy and the environment.
Though most attention in Africa is on democracy and development, Prof Maathai highlighted environment conservation, which is the most important thing for our livelihood and future.
As a teacher, Prof Maathai did a very good job to enlighten us all. This is her challenge and legacy to us.
We salute Prof Wangari Maathai, and may her soul rest in eternal peace.

David Nyaluke
Secretary, African Students Association of Ireland
