‘Only the twisted’ would object to animal welfare laws

Last update - Thursday, April 1, 2010, 13:38 By Metro Éireann

Ireland’s animal abuse community came to protest at the Green Party convention in Waterford last weekend.

The 27 March demonstration was in protest at forthcoming animal welfare legislation which will see the regulation of commercial puppy farming in Ireland, the banning of Ireland’s only deer hunting with hound packs, and the introduction of an Animal Health and Welfare Bill.
After years of relentless campaigning and sheer hard work, the campaign to get Ireland Inc to treat animals with respect is finally bearing fruit.
Only a person with a twisted attitude to animals would object to any legislation that would protect and defend the rights of the non-human members of our society.
The fact that animal abusers can parade on the streets of Waterford knowing full well the law is on their side is a shameful indictment of our treatment of animals. Those who kill animals for entertainment represent a layer of Irish society that is unfeeling and uncaring towards animals and by their actions on the hunting field enjoy wallowing in animal cruelty.
The British politician Enoch Powell is remembered for his infamous ‘rivers of blood’ speech’. When the history of the outlawing of hunting in Ireland is written, will Waterford city be remembered for 27 March 2010 when a river of filth protested on its quayside?
