‘No way’ for illegal Nigerians - Justice

Last update - Thursday, May 28, 2009, 12:32 By Metro Éireann

THE IRISH Government has no plans to regularise Nigerians who are illegally resident in Ireland, the Department of Justice has toldMetro Éireann.

A spokesperson for the department said those who are thinking of legally remaining in the State through the back door should forget it. “There are no proposals to introduce any general regularisation programme for those illegally present in the State.”
The department was responding to a recent statement by the Nigerian Ambassador to Ireland Dr Kemafo Chikwe that her mission is to persuade the Government to introduce measures which could see thousands of illegal and undocumented Nigerians who have been here for three years – and who have no criminal records – become legal residents.
On those who are undocumented, the spokesperson said: “[Regarding] migrant workers generally who have become undocumented through no fault of their own, after having previously held an employment permit, this is an issue which is being examined at the moment. “However, any cases which may fall to be considered under such proposals could only be considered on their individual merits and would not give rise to any general regularisation of illegal migrants.”
