Last update - Friday, April 1, 2011, 22:48 By Chinedu Onyejelem

MOST NIGERIANS in Ireland would like to see President Goodluck Jonathan win a second term, according to a new poll on the Nigerian presidential election.

The survey was carried out by Metro Éireann on a small sample of over 50 adults aged 18 and above in Ireland on 19 March 2011. Respondents from different ethnic groups were drawn from the six geo-political zones in Nigeria.
Some 98 per cent of all the survey participants do not belong to any political party in Nigeria. All the respondents say they would like to see good governance in the administration of the country.
An overwhelming 92 per cent of those surveyed said good governance would restore their confidence in the Nigerian society, promote rule of law and economic development.
In terms of the presidential election, set for 9 April, 80 per cent of Nigerians in Ireland who took part in the survey said they would like to see the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP win.
Some 10 per cent each supported the presidential candidates of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Nuhu Ribadu, and Muhammadu Buhari of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).
On the main priorities for the winner, 32 per cent said jobs and economic development while 20 per cent said fighting corruption.
Some 12 per cent of respondents said supply of adequate electricity, while another 12 per cent said electoral reform.
Ten per cent each suggested housing and health, and only three per cent said unity of the country was a main priority.
Apart from the presidential election, Nigerians will also vote to elect members of the national assembly on 2 April. Governorship and state assembly elections are scheduled for 16 April.
The winners will be sworn in on Nigerian Democracy Day on 29 May.
