Nigerian arrested over drive test impersonations

Last update - Friday, July 15, 2011, 22:17 By Metro Éireann

A DUBLIN-BASED Nigerian man is to be charged with impersonating fellow Africans in order to sit their driving tests for a fee.

It is believed that the man was a driving instructor in Nigeria and has lived in Ireland for some time. He was arrested this week at a Kilkenny driving test centre, when he was about to sit a driving test for an African woman.
It is understood that the man’s gender-neutral name allowed him to impersonate both sexes.
At press time he was due before Kilkenny District Court charged with impersonating two Africans so as to sit their driving exams.
Gardai are also investigating individuals who paid the man sums of up to €500 to do their driving test.
Only half of applicants pass Ireland’s driving exam. Some of the lowest pass rates are in Dublin – in Rathgar, Raheny and Finglas, where just over 40 per cent pass the test. However, Carlow has the lowest pass rate countrywide, at just over 35 per cent. The highest pass rate is in Ennis, at nearly 68 per cent.
In Kilkenny, where the Nigerian man was arrested, the pass rate is almost 44 per cent.
