NBA starts to appear at Irish Summer Jam?

Last update - Thursday, July 26, 2007, 00:00 By Metro Éireann

It has been rumoured that Basketball Ireland’s intercultural Summer Jam event is to have some high-profile visitors along to watch the action – and a number of NBA stars’ names are in the hat.

Sources inside Basketball Ireland said that at least two players from the Washington Wizards would be appearing at the Summer Jam finals – set to be held in August after a series of seven regional events held on weekends around the country – but couldn’t reveal which ones. Rumour has it, though, that Calvin Booth and Roger Mason may be the stars to appear.

The Summer Jam event, which tipped off last week, places members of different nationalities together on the same team by making it a requirement that each side has people from more than one country represented.

Organisers said of the tournament: “Basketball is the perfect medium to promote cross-cultural relationships and understanding in modern Irish society.” A spokesperson added that the event is “aiming to create awareness throughout Ireland of the many different cultures that now call Ireland their home by bringing them together”.

The finals of the competition, at which the US-based players are rumoured to appear, is due to take place in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght on 19 August. As well as seeing the final games being played out, fans who go along to take in the action will also get to witness both a three-point shootout contest and a dunk competition.
