Migrant kids learn how to be ‘cyber smart’ on the net

Last update - Thursday, August 15, 2013, 11:42 By Eliza Foster

Thirty migrant children aged from seven to 16 came together in Tallaght recently for a special workshop on learning to use social media and social networking safely.

The Itsupnet workshop was held at the County Library Computer Training Centre in Tallaght on 6 August following high demand from migrant parents who want their children to learn how to be safe on the internet.

Topics covered in the day-long workshop – which featured in-depth demos and a Q&A session  – included how to be ‘cyber smart’; Facebook safety and security; cyber security and social networking dos and don’ts; how to identify cyber bullying; and what to do when they or their friends are being bullied online.

The workshop aimed to help kids understand the difference between social media and social networking, as well grasp the importance and impact such services can have on their lives.

At the end of the day, the children were encouraged to write a 250-word essay on what they know about cyber bullying. The final date of submission is today 15 August and the winner will have their essay published in the next issue of Metro Éireann.
