Meath family festival celebrates interculturalism

Last update - Thursday, August 9, 2007, 00:00 By Metro Éireann

In a summer full of festivals, it is refreshing to find one that will cater for the family. One such event is the Meath Intercultural Family Festival, which aims to bring together families from all communities for a day of sport, fun, food and culture.

It will all be happening at Claremont Stadium in Navan this Saturday 11 August, with festivities starting at 12 noon. Festival organiser Deirdre Patel explains: “The main thing is that it’s for families. The stadium has a massive hall and there is a big pitch that will be hosting the Mini World Cup. We will also have two marquees to house some of the workshops and dancing events. We won’t be totally dependent on the weather but if there is rain we can hold some events under the marquees.”

With a packed programme there will be plenty to choose from, everything from Chinese dragons to Punjabi dancers, ethnic food stands, archery, fire juggling, bouncy castles, a martial arts display and fun karaoke – not to mention the running and sack races.

According to Patel, one of the highlights is set to be the Mini World Cup, which is “a must for all football fans; we are taking registration now. It will be five-a-side and there will also be a chance to kick a ball with Irish football legend Paul McGrath.”

No intercultural festival would complete without musical performances, and the Meath event will feature Gospel and Filipino choirs, as well as Africa’s Igbo drummers.

All families attending the event are encouraged to bring a picnic and get involved in the festivities and attractions. Entry is only 5 euro per family/2 euro per person.
