Masala Vada

Last update - Thursday, July 19, 2007, 00:00 By Metro Éireann

This week I am sharing with you a tasty snack called ‘masala vada’. It is made with Bengal gram, which you can get in any Asian food store or health food shop. Hope you like it!

Ingredients

- 1 cup Bengal gram (chana dal)
- 1 green chilli
- 1/2 inch cinnamon stick
- 2 cloves
- 1/4 tsp fennel seeds
- Salt to taste
- Oil to deep fry

Method

Soak the Bengal gram for four hours. Set aside 1/4 cup of the gram and grind the rest in a blender with the chilli, cinnamon, cloves and salt into a fine paste or dough.

Mix the fennel seeds into the dough and roll into small balls Wet the hands and flatten the balls slightly, then deep-fry them till they turn golden brown.

Serve hot with chilli sauce or tamarind sauce.
