MAMA Awards coming 24 Oct- Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin to attend event at Liberty Hall

Last update - Saturday, October 15, 2011, 10:15 By Metro Éireann

The Metro Éireann Media and Multicultural Awards (MAMA) – which celebrate organisations and individuals that promote cross-cultural understanding throughout Ireland – return on Monday 24 October after a three-year break.

The MAMA Awards recognise initiatives that elevate the status of cultural diversity in Ireland. First staged in 2002, the awards were established by Ireland’s first multicultural newspaper, Metro Éireann.
This year the awards ceremony features as part of Dublin City Council’s ‘One City One People’ initiative.
Organisers also revealed that Shalini Sinha, well known TV presenter and commentator on life issues and diversity, will once again host the awards ceremony, which will take place in Liberty Hall Theatre in Dublin city centre.
A number of VIPs are scheduled to attend the ceremony, while Dublin’s Deputy Lord Mayor Maria Parodi will officiate at the awards, which will be presented in two main categories: Multicultural and Media.
There will also be a Foras na Gaeilge award for an individual or organisation promoting the Irish language and culture among new immigrants. And a Special Judges’ Award – on the basis of combating racism or advocating the equality of ethnic minorities – will be given at the judges’ discretion.
Many applications were received from individuals, NGOs, State bodies and the private sector in addition to print, broadcast, visual, online and student media.
The judging panel has already met and is now deciding the winners in each category. Members of the panel include Pat Normanly, manager for employee development and equality at Dublin Bus; Declan Hayden of Dublin City Council’s Office for Integration; and Nadette Foley, steering Group member of Facing Forward.
Others are Siraj Zaidi, an independent radio and television producer and director of the Indian Film Festival Ireland; Breege Keenan, director of Vincentian Refugee Centre and winner of the 2009 MAMA Special Judges’ Award; and Tendai Madondo of Christian Aid.
Entries have been assessed based on evidence of excellence, impact on community, courage displayed and participation of  ethnic minority groups.
The 2011 MAMA Awards are proudly sponsored by An Post, Dublin City Council’s Office for Integration, Foras na Gaeilge, The Irish Times and MK Design Studio.
