Live webcast in Limerick part of drive to inform on human rights

Limerick people will today get an opportunity to keep track of Ireland’s progress in the United Nation’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR).

Doras Luimní is hosting a live webcast of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHCR) session in Geneva at Best Western Pery’s Hotel on Glentworth St from 10.30am.
The UPR is the UN’s system for monitoring human rights in its 192 member states. Each country’s human rights record is publicly assessed and recommendations are made for improvement. The county under review then has four years to implement these recommendations before it is reviewed again.
Today the UNHCR will formally adopt the Outcome Report of the UPR Working Group on Ireland. This report will clarify which of the remaining recommendations will be accepted or rejected. Once it is adopted, the report will provide a blueprint for the protection of human rights in Ireland over the next four years.
The wide-ranging issues addressed in these recommendations include gender equality, measures to combat racism and discrimination, mental health, disability, children’s rights, social protection and prison conditions.
“These are human rights issues that affect people from all walks of life and many members of our community are keenly interested in them,” said a statement from Doras Luimní.
