Language schools in warning on prostitution

Last update - Thursday, June 25, 2009, 16:19 By Metro Éireann

ORGANISED crime gangs are running language schools as a front for illegal prostitution businesses, Fine Gael’s immigration spokesperson has warned.

“Bogus schools, established by the organised crime groups, are assisting students in obtaining the visa applications by providing the necessary documents,” said Denis Naughten TD. “This allows the use of genuine documents instead of falsified documents to apply for access to a school.”
According to Naughten, members of the Oireachtas were informed about the situation during a cross-party briefing, and said “urgent action” is needed to deal with “the proliferation of sex trafficking into Ireland’s €180m illegal sex industry”.
“The Government’s long promised legislation to regulate the provisions of education services including the teaching of English to foreign students has come to nothing. The Education Ireland Bill was withdrawn by Govern-ment last year,” he added.
