Anthony Winterlich from NUI Galway bagged the prize for his pedestrian identification project that could greatly enhance safety on our roads.
European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, awarded Winterlich and five other gold medallists from universities in France, the UK, Italy, Ireland and Switzerland for their work at a ceremony in Athens.
Other winners included Rawia El Rashidy from the University of Leeds, awarded for her work in addressing “the resilience of transport networks to unexpected climate-related events”, and Nan Zheng of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland, who won in the field of transport, mobility and infrastructure.
Pejman Keikhaei Dehdezi from the University of Nottingham took gold in the field of energy, environment and resources, while Riccardo Panciroli from the University of Bologna in Italy won for design and production of vehicles, vessels and infrastructure, and Lijun Wei from the Université de Technologie de Belfort-Montbéliard in France for his work in “complementarities of transport modes”.
