Last year on 8 March, women around the world celebrated the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day (IWD). In Dublin the day brought culturally diverse women, girls, mothers and sisters together to promote friendship, inspire hope, love and the bonds of sisterhood.
Thousands of events occur throughout the month of March each year to highlight both local and global gender issues and mark the economic, political and social achievements of women of all ages. This year is aimed at the younger generations under the theme of ‘Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures’ – the perfect tool for inspiring future leaders, to empower and equip them with knowledge, foresight and innovative ways of thinking in order to better themselves, the society and their futures.
But mothers are also sure to be recognised this year, as Mother’s Day in Ireland falls on 18 March – the perfect occasion to pay tributes to those women who have given us life and nurtured us, whose love and care knows no boundaries, and who do everything to keep their children happy, safe and loved.
For AkiDwA chief executive Salome Mbugua, IWD “is an important day for women worldwide. It is the only day in the year that we get to celebrate our success, strengths, our struggles as we continue to challenge the inequality and discrimination that women continue to experience.”
This year AkiDwA invites all women in Ireland to join in the celebration at the Fashion Connexion fashion showcase at Dublin City Hall from 6pm on Thursday 8 March, organised by FashionPR Ireland.
Among those showing their wares will be fashion and jewellery designers Helen Moriarty, Janice Byrne, Sinead Cooke, Ger Breslin, Niamh Spain, Sara Hunter, vintage boutique Golly Gosh, various hair and beauty companies and the Runway Models Academy’s multicultural fashion models as they unite to make this annual celebration “the ultimate stylish and fashionable event”.
Tolu Omoyele is the organiser of Fashion Connexion fashion showcase and director of FashionPR Ireland.
