New poetry anthology aims to showcase work of Ireland’s newcomers. Catherine Reilly reports
TWO academics at a leading Dublin university are aiming to give Ireland’s immigrants a platform to add another verse to the country’s proud literary history.
Borbála Faragó and Eva Bourke of University College Dublin’s School of English, Drama and Film are asking poets of immigrant backgrounds who can write in English to send in their poems for possible inclusion in a new anthology. They say the anthology will collect works from people who were born outside Ireland and came to live here (first generation), and those who were born here but have parents, or one parent born elsewhere (second generation).
The collection is intended to reflect the increasing diversity of cultural life in Ireland and to give first and second generation immigrants an opportunity to showcase their distinctive contribution to contemporary Irish literature.
Poems should be submitted by the end of this month and must be typed. The poet's name, address, and email address are to be printed at the bottom of each page. The editors also request that poem/s be accompanied by a short covering letter (maximum 500 words) and a stamped, self-addressed envelope for replies and the return of manuscripts.
Two copies of each poem/s and accompanying letter should be sent before 30 January to Borbála Faragó and Eva Bourke, School of English, Drama and Film, University College Dublin, Belfield, Dublin 4.
