Immigrant kids benefit from Co Laois summer language programme

Sixteen students from schools throughout Co Laois have participated in a three-week summer language programme.
The intensive English language programme is aimed at young people who have difficulty engaging with mainstream subjects because of their English language skills and require support with their language learning.
English language teacher Sandra Doyle said the programme is facilitated by City of Dublin VEC Separated Children’s Service with the support of Co Laois VEC.
“Participation in the Summer School Programme gives students the opportunity to improve their English and also experience Irish history and culture in a friendly and supportive environment.”
According to Doyle, the morning English classes are student-centred with short-term goals and students are provided with English language course materials during classes.
In the afternoons students have the opportunity to visit places of cultural and historical interest, participate in a tour of Portlaoise library and partake in arts and crafts activities.
