Ingvar Kamprad, owner of the Swedish furniture retail giant Ikea, met this Monday with Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Economy Waldemar Pawlak to discuss the setting up of a new factory in the country for the European market.
Karolina Horoszczak, a spokesperson for Ikea Poland, told Metro Éireann that no detailed decision has been made as yet to shift the production of wooden boards for the company’s flat-pack furniture ranges to the eastern European country.
The prospective location for the Ikea factory is unknown, but the eastern Poland region has been mentioned as a candidate by unofficial sources. It is estimated that 2,000 new jobs will be created if the plan is realised.
Ikea Poland currently employs 10,000 people across seven stores, in GdaÅ„sk, Kraków, WrocÅ‚aw, Katowice and PoznaÅ„, and two stores in Warsaw.
Ikea will also soon be a major employer in Dublin as its store in Ballymun, set to open later this year, will recruit at least 500 workers. The opening of the furnishings superstore, which was originally scheduled for next month, has been delayed until the completion of upgrades to the M50 motorway in the area, as per the conditions of planning permission.
