Captain Phillips Dir: Paul Greengrass
Captain Phillips tells the story of the eponymous mariner and the 2009 hijacking of him and his crew on the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama by Somali pirates - the first American merchant vessel to be hijacked in 200 years.
An experienced captain, Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks) sacrifices himself as a hostage to save the crew.
But while a rescue team attempts to save him, Phillips finds himself in a psychological war with the pirates and especially their leader Muse.
The film was directed by Paul Greengrass (Bloody Sunday, United 93) from a screenplay by Billy Ray based upon Phillip's memoir of the incident, A Captain's Duty.
Captain Phillips stars veteran actor Tom Hanks as Captain Phillips with Catherine Keener and Barkhad Abdi, and opens in cinemas on 18 October.
