Filipino beauty event with big difference comes to Dublin

Last update - Thursday, September 25, 2008, 00:00 By Metro Éireann

A PAGEANT for transvestite and transgender members of the Filipino community in Ireland will take place next month.

Miss Pink Philippines 2008 will see contestants competing in different categories including the modelling of Philippine tribal costumes, swimwear and evening gowns. The contest will also have a talent competition segment.

“Yes, it’s like the Miss World,” said one of the organisers, Francis Noel. “Philippines culture is mad about beauty pageants. Everybody wants that tiara to say ‘Look at me, I’m a beauty queen!'”

Miss Pink Philippines is now in its third year. According to Noel: “At some various points in time we have candidates from all over Europe who entered the pageant. This year we have five candidates from the UK and five candidates from Ireland. This event is supported by Filipino business establishments here in Ireland.”

The event will take place on Sunday 12 October at 7pm in the Button Factory (formerly the Temple Bar Music Centre). Tickets are available at Makati Avenue Restaurant on Capel Street, Dublin 1 and at the door.
