TOP-CLASS musicians from Poland and Ireland will join together for a night of electricacoustic music this Friday.
ArtPolonia, in cooperation with the Festival Music 21 and the Liberty Hall Theatre, will present the concert as part of the 3rd Dublin Culture Night on 19 September. Organisers say that Cellotronicum, an “exceptional project” by leading cellist Andrzej Bauer, will be a particular highlight.
The premiere of Cellotronicum took place during the ‘Warsaw Autumn’ Festival of 2002 and was recognised as one of the most important artistic events of the festival. Andrzej Bauer is supported in this Culture Night performance by Ireland’s Godfather of electro- acoustic music Roger Doyle and his new freeimprovisation ensemble General Practice. Among the performers in General Practice is one of this country’s most innovative electric guitarists, Keith O’Brien, who also uses a laptop to free-generate electronically his improvisations.
Amain feature of the concert is a performance of Doyle’s masterpiece, Under the Green Time. Composed for Uilleann Pipes and to be played by renowned piper Brian Ó hUiginn, Under the Green Time is a brilliant distortion of received notions of Irishness, Irish traditional music and Celticism.
The programme is designed to show the cello’s range of sound potential, amplified, transformed and enriched by computer instrumental technology. The artist’s intentions are to continue this initiative in order to enlarge the original Polish repertoire for cello and electronic media. The event is supported by the Arts Council and the Polish Embassy in Dublin. 19 September Liberty Hall Theatre, Dublin 1 @ 8 p Tickets: ?20/?15 www.artpolonia.org www.music21.ie
