Everyone must help in ending poverty

The Government’s plan to promote the 2010 European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion was the focus at a meeting of the Oireachtas Committee on European Affairs.

The meeting last Tuesday 2 March outlined how Ireland would implement the goals of the initiative, which aims to find a rapid solution for the 80 million EU citizens who currently live below the poverty line.
Poverty remains a significant problem in Ireland, despite the boom of the Celtic Tiger years, as committee Bernard Durkan TD highlighted ahead of the meeting. Moreover, the current economic climate has meant a lack of investment in tackling poverty head on.
It’s created a situation where growing numbers are unemployed, children continue to drop out of school, and thousands remain in disadvantaged areas.
In light of this, at best the year might strongly highlight the needs of people who are directly living with poverty – it cannot provide for them.
According to the Government’s own Combat Poverty Agency, one of the reasons why poverty exists in Ireland is the lack of proper distribution of our economic resources. The Celtic Tiger did not benefit those at the fringe of the society.
However, we must not lose hope. Tackling inequalities in our society must not be left in the hands of the State alone. Everyone, young and old, must play a positive in part in bringing an end to poverty here, even if that includes sharing some of your own wealth – monetary or otherwise – with others.
