Dun Laoghaire hosts arts and crafts exhibition

Last update - Thursday, December 10, 2009, 16:40 By Metro Éireann

‘From Rags to Riches’ is the theme of this year’s exhibition by the Artisans Art & Craft Studio, which will be held at the Concourse in the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council buildings from 16-22 December.

The annual event is organised by St. John of God’s Carmona Services in Glenageary, Co Dublin, which provides a range of day services, work opportunities, residential services and respite care for children and adults with intellectual disabilities in the south Dublin catchment area.
In 2002 the Artisans Arts & Craft Studio was set up to develop the artistic skills through the production of a variety of art and craft products. Today, under the instruction of artists Socorro Murphy and Nicola Carew, the programme provides skills training for over 30 people.
Other places where the studio has exhibited their work include Dunmore House, Dublin Castle, the Wicklow Arts Festival, Dalkey Castle and Heritage Centre, Bray Public Library, Dun Laoghaire Town Hall and Citi Bank.
Phil Gray, director of St John of God Carmona Services, says: “We are delighted to be hosting their exhibition of work within our local community of Dun Laoghaire. We hope it will further develop links within our community, increase awareness and promote the integration of individuals with disabilities.
“Art, being a universal language, has helped the group develop links with galleries, museums, art colleges and other local groups. It is a celebration of the talent and achievement of the artisans and a great occasion of pride for the artists themselves and for their family and friends.”
The exhibition will be open to the public from 9am-5pm on 16, 17 and 21 December, and from 9am-4pm on 18 and 22 December. All work on display will be available for sale and can be taken away upon purchase.
For further information please contact the Artisans at 01 282 3333 or 01 285 5888.
