Dublin rolls out welcome mat for Suu Kyi

Last update - Friday, June 15, 2012, 02:10 By Metro Éireann

A giant banner has been hung outside Liberty Hall to welcome Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi ahead of her visit to Dublin on Monday 18 June.

Tickets have already sold out for the ‘Electric Burma’ concert in her honour at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre.
But hundreds are expected to gather for a public event outside the venue at 8.30pm, when Suu Kyi will join Dublin Lord Mayor Andrew Montague and Amnesty International Ireland executive director Colm O’Gorman to sign the Roll of Honorary Freedom for the City of Dublin.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner was previously conferred with the freedom of the city on 18 March 2000 by former Lord Mayor Mary Freehill.
“There is already huge anticipation building around the visit of Aung San Suu Kyi to Dublin next week’” said O’Gorman. “We’re delighted that there is going to be an opportunity for people unable to make it to the concert to see her and more details of the public event will be announced in the coming days.”
The Lord Mayor added that Suu Kyi’s visit to Dublin “is an historic and important occasion. Her commitment to peace to gain freedom of the citizens of her country, with great personal sacrifice, marks her as one of the greatest leaders in the world.
“She is a worthy recipient of the Freedom of the City of Dublin and I am delighted that she can sign the Roll of Honorary Freedom in person with us next Monday.”
