‘Overcoming poverty’ was the theme of this year’s World Food Day seminar held at Kilcock GAA Club in Co Kildare recently.
The annual event was hosted as ever by women’s empowerment and educational network Family Faith Initiative (FFI) and also marked International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, with discussion on tackling the problem of poverty through gender equality, education and sharing life experiences.
FFI founder Ada Christine Eloji told Metro Éireann that the initiative is “all about creating awareness about food security and worldwide poverty, as well as empowering people, especially women, to eradicate poverty.”
She added that the more than 40 participants contributed a “very strong message” about the need for high nutritional food and less waste, and that many were made aware that poverty is a global issue, not just one for Ireland or developing countries.
Eloji said the latest seminar built on the success of last year’s event, which highlighted the best places to shop for healthy food at low prices – something of an “eye-opener” to many of the women in attendance.
Next year, Eloji said she hopes to involve more local and global stakeholders to take part in the seminar.
This year’s event concluded with two solo music performances and award presentations, as well as a ‘taste of food diversity’ with various ethnic foods such as Congolese, Nigerian and Chinese treats among the more familiar Italian pasta and traditional Irish cake.
