Journalist Jekaterina ‘Kate’ Saveljeva on…
Her favourite pub and/or landmarkin Dublin
Jekaterina Saveljena’s first offering is Ryan’s pub on Queen Street in Smithfield – home to some brilliant blues sessions on Thursdays and to a varied clientele – “from lawyers to homeless”, as she succinctly puts it. The nearby Dice Bar is another favourite.
She also strongly recommends live music venue JJ Smyths on Aungier Street – when you have money in your pocket, that is. “If I have spare cash, I go to JJ Smyth’s for jazz and blues,” she says.
As for her favourite landmark, it is the Irish Museum of Modern Art, housed in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, probably the finest 17th-century building in Ireland.
Photographer Jekaterina – Kate to her friends – says she appreciates the grounds and sense of history that laces the surrounds. She also likes visiting exhibitions at the museum and particularly enjoyed viewing works of the late Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.
Her favourite sports club in Dublin
Jekaterina suggests that she is not particularly sporty, but when Dublin is “cold and grey” – as it often is these days – she lives for the sauna at the Markievicz Leisure Centre on Townsend Street. “To compensate for the cold!” she explains.
