Hubert McCormack, administrator with Muscular Dystrophy Ireland, on…

His favourite event in Dublin:

When it comes to going out on the town, Hubert particularly enjoys nice meals and quiet pints with friends – especially in the nice weather when you can watch the world go by. Living in Dublin’s Docklands, there is always plenty to see.

In respect of shows or gigs, Hubert would be “more inclined to go” if it was organised by the music promoters MCD. As Hubert explains, he is a wheelchair user who requires a personal assistant (PA) in order to live in independent life, and MCD do not charge PAs an entry fee to events – unlike other entities that disgracefully do.

His favourite pub and/or landmark in Dublin:

Hubert’s a pub man, it would be fair to say, although a meal out is what he usually enjoys the most. Among his favourite watering holes is The Ferryman on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay.

“It’s my kind of pub, ” he says. “The wooden floor…there is nothing posh about it. And they do a nice pint of Guinness.”

He also likes the Market Bar on Fade Street, Clarke’s in Ringsend and the Dandelion Bar on St Stephen’s Green – although he doesn’t stay until the wee hours. “My clubbing days are over,” he says firmly.

As far as a favourite landmark, he thinks the Samuel Beckett Bridge is “cool” and also wants to mention Muscular Dystrophy Ireland’s Centre of Excellence in Chapelizod, Dublin.

The centre has a state-of-the-art apartment designed for people with disabilities, one that was recently awarded four-star self-catering approval by Bord Fáilte, he outlines.
