Ceol agus craic at Leinster Fleadh ‘11

Last update - Thursday, June 16, 2011, 11:35 By Metro Éireann

Traditional Irish music is a legacy that has never died. It is still growing, taught and appreciated all over the world – and it is a legacy that will be celebrated in the upcoming Leinster Fleadh.

Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann is working hard to ensure a top week of traditional music in Portlaoise from 4-10 July. More than 5,000 competitors are expected to take part in traditional music sessions with musicians of all ages and instruments of all sizes, with competitions for everyone.

Speaking at the launch last week, committee chairman PJ Phelan said there is “no better way to show what the fleadh is about. We are not stopping with competitions and indoor events – there will be a street festival where the public will be entertained free of charge.”

The Leinster Fleadh festivities start on Monday 4 July with a walk-and-talk tour of Portlaoise, followed on Wednesday with a tour of the town and county by vintage car.

Music sessions begin on Tuesday 5 July in PJ Kavanagh’s Lounge with CCÉ Portlaoise kicking things off at 8.30pm. On Thursday the sessions continue with CCÉ Camross. All musicians are welcome to these free events.

On the Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the Singers Club upstairs at Kavanagh’s will feature storytelling and song from 10pm till late. And the jam-packed schedule on Saturday and Sunday has plenty of entertainment and variety (as well as a child play area for those who want a break from the kids).

Sunday’s highlights include step dancing demonstrations by Lynam and Buggy Schools at 2pm on Main Street, followed by open air dancing from 3pm to 6pm at Lower Square. The marching bands competition will run between Parade Market Square and Fitzmaurice Plaza, starting at 2pm. And the main stage on both Saturday and Sunday will feature a selection of renowned performers.

All in all it’s set to be a fantastic few days of ceol agus craic!
