Cenafriq dance troupe looks to grow its ranks

Last update - Thursday, March 1, 2012, 15:09 By Metro Éireann

A multicultural dance group that aims to link African cultural dance with contemporary styles is looking for female dancers and singers from all nationalities to join its growing list of performers.

Cenafriq said its decision to recruit more members follows its successful outing in 2011, during which the group performed at many special events including the Metro Éireann Media and Multicultural Awards (MAMA), the Kenyan Independence Anniversary and the Miss Nigeria Ireland beauty pageant.
Founder and spokesperson Cecilia Ekpechue told Metro Éireann: “We are trying to grow the organisation. Getting more people from different backgrounds would enable it beef up its numbers and to put on more shows.”
One does not need to be a professional dancer or singer in order to join the fast-growing dance group, according to Ekpechue, who says all that’s required is an interest in and love of dancing and singing.
She added that full training would be provided for selected applicants whether they are new or professional performers.
“Exposure, integration with other and learning about others’ cultures” are on the list of what dancers stand to gain by joining her group, Ekpechue said.
Interested female dancers and singers can contact Cecilia Ekpechue at 087 694 0766 or 085 140 0247. Alternatively e-mail the group at cenafriq@gmail.com or contact via social website Facebook at facebook.com/cenafriq
