Celebrate Ogun Day in west Dublin with AOSI

Last update - Sunday, September 1, 2013, 14:13 By Metro Éireann

The Association of Ogun State Indigenes (AOSI) is a socio-cultural organisation in Ireland.

It is a registered charity organisation established with the objectives of assisting its members to integrate into Irish society while also undertaking various projects focused on the alleviation of poverty and empowerment of less privileged communities in Ogun State, south-western Nigeria. The membership of the association is open to any indigene of Ogun State residing in Ireland.

One of the very successful programmes undertaken by AOSI in the past was the ‘Every Little Helps’ project, whereby members sourced educational materials including computers, books, televisions, and furniture for the benefit of local community schools in Ogun State. In another instance, hundreds of books were donated to Itori Primary School in Ogun State.

This past month, AOSI successfully completed and commissioned two multi-purpose educational facilities in Ogun State, consisting of a library equipped with computers in two different schools located in Joga and Imasai. The projects were completed with funds contributed by members and donations from the general public.

The members of AOSI want to give back to those who gave to them by inviting the general public to their annual Ogun Day programme, scheduled for 6-8 September. This year's celebration consists of an indoor and outdoor programme at various locations in west Dublin, with a Yoruba talent show on Friday 6, a family fun day on Saturday 7 and the gala awards night on Sunday 8 September.

“The objective of the event is to promote our cultural-heritage,” says AOSI president Dotun Adegbesan. "It is also as an avenue for social integration of people from diverse backgrounds.

“Expected are dignitaries from all over the world, including Ogun State government officials. There will also be a unique participation of the Ogun State Ministry of Culture and Tourism, with their planned exhibition of cultural artefacts, clothes like the adire, and foods that are particular to Ogun State.”
