A series of events will be held this month to recognize International Women's Day on 8 March.

A series of events will be held this month to recognise International Women’s Day on 8 March.

In Ireland, Dublin City Public Libraries will celebrate the achievements of women in civic life throughout the month of March. Among the events scheduled is a commemoration of women’s involvement in the 1913 Dublin Lockout with a series of talks and storytelling sessions.

One of the latter will be presented by NUI Galway lecturer Micheline Sheehy-Skeffington in Pembroke Library at 1pm on Thursday 7 March in association with the Ballsbridge, Donnybrook & Sandymount Historical Society.

For a project connected with her family home, Sheehy-Skeffington researched the history of her grandparents Hanna and Francis, both at home and in the USA,

She subsequently developed an illustrated story from her collected family memories and anecdotes particularly concerning their political activities and suffrage activism.

On Friday 8 March at 11am, Dublin City Council’s Irish language walking group will gather at Meeting House Square in Temple Bar for a visit to Leinster House. Particpants will have an opportunity to meet with independent Dublin Central TD Maureen O’Sullivan and also receive a tour of the Houses of the Oireachtas.

At 10am On Tuesday 12 March, Irish migrant women’s network AkiDwA will celebrate its annual International Women’s Day event at Dublin’s City Hall.

In a statement, the organisation said: “Our theme for the day is ‘Young Migrant Women empowering themselves through self-expression.”

AkiDwA will also launch the outcome of its survey on the integration challenges of young migrant women living in Ireland.

Beyond Ireland, events will take place at UN headquarters in New York to coincide with the 57th session of the Commission on the Status of Women.

These include a high-level conference on the elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls, as well as a panel discussion on services and responses for women and girls subjected to violence, all of which will be held from 4-6 March.

This year also marks 36 years since the UN General Assembly declared 1975 as International Women’s Year and organised the first ever global conference on women in Mexico.

Following that conference, the UN declared 1976-1985 as the UN Decade for Women and subsequently urged member states to observe 8 March as International Women’s Day aimed at respecting women’s rights.
